  Chapter One

Jordie Simmons glared at the bedroom door, as if he could magically will either the door or himself closer. Nothing. What did he expect? Grunting, Jordie spent the next five minutes positioning himself near the edge of his bed. Crutches came next. Gripping the bars, Jordie hoisted himself up, hissing between his teeth and letting his upper body take the weight.

“One more week and the cast comes off,” Jordie mumbled, making his way out of his bedroom.

He could have asked for Zack’s help anytime. He heard Zack moving in the apartment. Jordie squinted through his bedroom blinds, expecting the afternoon sun at least, but outside was pitch black. Jesus. How long did he sleep?

His stomach growled, confirming the truth. The last time he ate had been early this morning, judging by the empty bag of Cheetos on the floor. Way to go in proving to Zack he could be an independent adult. Zack wasn’t bad for a brother.

When their parents died in a car accident when Jordie was sixteen, Zack took over raising him, refusing to let the foster care system take Jordie. Jordie knew it hadn’t been easy for Zack, who’d been bitten by a werewolf and was trying to learn to control his beast. To help with the transition, they moved from the city to the small town of Darkfall, where the wolf who bit Zack mentored him.

Despite being close to his brother, Jordie didn’t like being fussed over.

“Jordie, are you awake?” called Zack from outside.

“I’m coming.” Jordie gritted his teeth.

With his supernatural hearing, Zack very well knew he was up and about. The doorknob rattled before Jordie could get to it. Before he could yell at Zack, “he could do it himself,” Zack was back in the kitchen, pretending nothing happened. Stupid werewolf. He loved Zack, but sometimes Zack conveniently forgot humans weren’t always fragile.

“How are you feeling? Did you take your medication?” Zack asked, regarding him.

Jordie glowered at him. “Zack, I’m twenty-three. Stop treating me like I’m some idiotic kid who doesn’t know better.”

Zack snarled. “Stop acting like one. You got into that car with Nestor, knowing the bastard had one too many beers to drink.”

Flustered, Jordie could do nothing but engage in a glaring match with his brother. The old Jordie would have walked out, but that would only prove he hadn’t changed one bit. No one could fault Jordie. He tried to make something of himself. After college, he tried living by himself in the city, hoping to score a job with a reputable accounting firm. No one was hiring and Jordie didn’t exactly come from a top-grade college. His savings started to dwindle, so Jordie had no choice but to return home, tail hanging between his legs.

That led to meeting his childhood friend Nestor, getting hammered at their favorite bar, and the accident.

Looking tired, Zack nodded to the pizza boxes on the kitchen counter. “Help yourself. I’m heading out to help take care of pack business. Matt is coming over.”

Jordie’s spine prickled at the mention of Zack’s best friend. “Fuck, bro. I don’t need a babysitter.”

For the first time since he arrived, Zack lost his cool. Figure blurring, Zack gripped his
shoulders. Jordie breathed through his nostrils. He knew Zack would never hurt him, but it was the worry in Zack’s eyes that stumped him, and filled him with guilt.

“Jordie, I can’t lose you, too.”

Swallowing, Jordie’s anger evaporated. Zack did his best. If their positions were reversed, Jordie would be pissed, too. Jordie could suck it up and let his big brother fuss over him for one more week. Why did it have to be Matt out of everyone else, though?

The werewolves of the Darkfall Mountain Pack took turns raising Jordie when Matt had something to take care of. Jordie knew every shifter by heart and saw them as members of his extended family, but Matt was different. Jordie had a crush on Matt for as long as he could remember. The naïve him back then thought they could be perfect together. Hell, Jordie knew he wanted Matt the moment Zack introduced them.

Too bad Matt only saw Jordie as Zack’s kid brother, nothing else but a favor for Zack. With his heart still raw from a break-up, Jordie didn’t think he could stand to be in the same room as Matt. His high school graduation party still burned fresh in his mind. Drunk and giddy, Jordie finally got the courage to steal from Matt’s sinfully sexy lips.

It would be a thousand times better for Matt to be a dick, to be cruel, instead of being kind. “Sorry, kid. I don’t see you that way.”

Being called kid enraged Jordie. He planned on going to Darkfall University, but changed his mind the next day, surprising the hell out of Zack and himself. Zack relented, although Jordie sensed the notion of him moving so far unsettled Matt. Still, Jordie owed his brother a lot, so he would stomach one asshole for one evening.

Besides, how much damage could he do in the span of a couple of hours?

  “When’s he coming over?”

  “I hear his bike downstairs.”

“Oh, fucking great.” Jordie didn’t mean to sound so sullen.

He’d hoped he might have some time to prepare himself, both mentally and physically. It had been ages since he’d last talked or spoken to Matt. Part of Jordie wanted to never see Matt again, but another wondered what Matt looked like, after all these years. From what Jordie garnered from the little bits of information Zack told him, Matt remained unchanged. He still worked at the same auto repair shop as Zack did. Matt was also still a man-whore who refused to find a mate, unlike most werewolves.

“Is there something between you and Matt?” Zack asked, frowning, studying him.

“There’s nothing to worry about.” At Zack’s inquisitive look, Jordie shook his head.

“Are you still mad at him for not attending your college graduation?”

Oh, brother. Way to go, bringing up another old hurt. Then again, what did Jordie expect? He avoided Darkfall like a plague, refusing to come home, so Zack dropped by his dorm instead. He hadn’t spoken one word to Matt during his four years away. Did he expect Matt to congratulate him on getting a paper degree that got him nowhere in the end?

Hell, Jordie didn’t even like numbers, much less accounting, but it had always been their parents’ dream for one of their kids to be the first to go to college. Zack dropped out of high school to help pay the bills, so Jordie pretended to be interested in numbers.

“Go. We’ll be fine, just some loose strings to tie up.”

  “Okay then.”

The doorbell rang, and Jordie stared at his reflection from the toaster. He looked dishevelled, like he just woke up from bed. What a great first impression.

“You sure you don’t need help?” Jordie overheard Matt saying to Zack. Damn it all, the deep sound of Matt’s voice startled him to attention.

“I’m good. You’re doing me a hell of a favor by being here. He’s been a little moody lately,” Zack said.

Gritting his teeth, Jordie said, “I’m right here. I can hear what you assholes are saying.”

“Sorry, baby Brother. Got to run. Play nice.”

With a flash of his toothy grin, Zack disappeared, leaving Jordie alone with the asshole who broke his heart all those years ago. Jordie told himself he’d play it cool. Show Matt indifference and tell him he’d be in his room. All his plans fell away the moment Matt walked into the apartment, locking the front door, to regard him.

Matt froze and so did Jordie. Every muscle in his body refused to move. Matt shouldn’t be able to affect him this much, but he did. At six-foot-two, Matt was broad shouldered, every inch of him made of chiselled muscle. Dark-blond hair cut close to his scalp, Jordie’s attention was drawn to his face, still heart-achingly handsome despite the nose that had been broken a couple of times. Piercing green eyes gazed at him with a newfound intensity Jordie had never felt before. Matt clenched his square jaw and ground his teeth so hard Jordie thought they would break.

He had some sassy remark ready. To tell Matt to go fuck himself and leave if babysitting him was such a chore, but he couldn’t unglue his tongue. All Jordie wanted to do was approach Matt, touch his stubble, and beg Matt to kiss him while pressing his body against Matt, wondering if Matt’s dick would harden at his touch.

Jordie settled for eyeing Matt the way Matt regarded him from top to bottom. Years hadn’t made Matt neglect his body. He knew working out had been one of Zack’s hobbies, same went for most shifters who kept themselves in fighting form. Swallowing, Jordie culled the urge to unbutton Matt’s flannel shirt, run his fingers through the solid hewn muscles of his upper chest, and find his way to Matt’s jeans—which Jordie didn’t miss sported an erection.

“Jordie, you’re all grown up,” Matt said hoarsely, breaking the spell of silence.

Jordie consciously angled his body to the side, hoping Matt didn’t see the woody he sported in his jeans. Hard to do with the crutches, but how could the sight of Matt never fail to reduce him to a quivering mess? Twenty-three and Matt still managed to have a hold on him. Fucking great.

“There’s no need to hide from me, little human. I can smell your arousal all the way from here.”

Jordie opened his mouth, sneering. “Go fuck yourself.”

Oh, great comeback. Forget being mature, Jordie settled for anything at this rate. “I’m going to my room. Help yourself to anything.”

Jordie left the werewolf staring at him. Turning his back, Jordie began to limp back, ignoring his growling stomach. Hiding seemed the better option if he wanted to survive tonight. This proved Jordie wasn’t at all ready to face Matt.

“Wait just a fucking second,” Matt said. “Don’t you dare turn your back on me.”

  “Watch me.” Jordie grunted.

God. When did his bedroom become so far? Sweat coated his back. Hearing the movement behind him, Jordie limped faster, but no human could outrun a werewolf, much less one with a broken leg. The moment Matt’s hand closed on the back of his neck, Jordie forgot about reason. Matt’s touch burned, sending tingles right through his chest and groin.

Good Lord, only one touch? What the hell was happening to him? Jordie wasn’t aware of letting his crutches go, or pitching forward to the carpet, but before that could happen, strong arms wrapped around his waist, catching him. His crutches clattered to the floor. Matt held him close, breathing against his neck, and not letting go.

Matt’s words stopped Jordie cold, scared him, and excited him all at once. “Fuck, Jordie, you smell so fucking good.”

  Chapter Two

Matt didn’t know what the hell happened. He was supposed to be here as a favor to Zack. Certainly, he didn’t expect anything out of the awkward evening. Zack needed him, so Matt came, despite not wanting to. The memory of Jordie’s high school graduation still burned bright in his mind. The press of Jordie’s lips against his own, and the way Zack’s kid brother looked, bright-eyed, eager, and fucking tempting. Matt fucked anything that walked on two legs and at that moment, his wolf wanted nothing but Jordie.

God, Jordie’s kiss felt like a wrecking ball, incinerating everything in its path. Never before had Matt and his wolf wanted anyone so badly, but it took him a second later to remember this was Zack’s kid b
rother and Zack’s only family. Damn it, but the fucking pack saw Jordie grow up from depressed kid to promising adult. So Matt kept his distance while Jordie nursed his wounds, thousands of miles away.

Matt told himself this was better. The kid would make new friends. Find some lucky bastard to love. Even though he had zero claims on Jordie, the thought rankled. Matt’s mind occasionally went back to that fateful day, full of so much revelation and sorrow, and he was green with envy each time Zack told him about the recent guy Jordie was seeing. Matt handled his jealousy in the only way he knew how, in drink and one-night-stands, but after Jordie’s kiss, no amount of casual sex could cure his obsession.

After hearing Jordie came back home, Matt still kept away, but since Zack was his best friend, he knew their paths would eventually cross. He’d employ the same tactic as he did before, except one glimpse of Jordie made him forget why he kept his distance in the first place. Matt hardly recognized the lean young man in front of him. Although Jordie had the same shaggy brown hair and sported the same yummy, slender physique, the shadows under Jordie’s eyes told Matt Jordie had ridden his share of rough roads. While they never communicated, Zack was always concerned about Jordie’s time in the city. The kid had it hard—no, Matt couldn’t keep thinking of Jordie as that.

Matt swore to keep this civil until Jordie riled up all the anger contained inside him when he blew Matt off and retreated to his room.

Pissed, Matt unthinkingly closed the distance between them, startling the human. Jordie let go of his crutches and Matt automatically caught him, not realizing his error. Once he'd got hold of Jordie, Matt refused to let go. His wolf caught wind of Jordie’s distinctive scent and it drove Matt mad with unexpected want. Years of keeping away made him suddenly long once more for the forbidden.
