  Sergio's Obsession

To strengthen the Darkfall Mountain pack, Alpha Sergio Esteban must marry a she-wolf from the enemy pack. Too bad Sergio plays for the all-male team and is more interested in his bride-to-be’s half-blood brother, Ron. Sergio has always placed the needs of his pack before his own. But this time, he intends to claim his obsession, no matter the stakes.

As the weakest omega on the roster and the runt of the litter, Ron Silverback is used to being abused and kicked around. When Sergio unexpectedly shows interest, Ron finally has a way out. But choosing Sergio might mean making an enemy of his own family, and starting a war. Sergio’s love, a future, and his freedom…are three things Ron never envisioned having, but they’re something worth fighting for.

  Chapter One

“We’ve sent the checks out to the families of the victims. The Fredes family’s eldest kid is out of surgery, and will be fine. Aside from the cost of rebuilding the damaged establishments, that’s the extent of the damage. The funds—” Michella began.

“Money is not the fucking problem.” Sergio Esteban, Alpha of the Darkfall Mountain Pack, instantly regretted his outburst a second later.

Most humans, even members of his pack, would flinch at his unexpected flare of anger. Among the members of the supernatural community, Alphas were known to have a short fuse. Sergio by comparison, always approached any problem thrown at him with cold logic and reason, which made him an effective leader. When he got pissed, there was reason.

Michella didn’t flinch or offer her throat to him in submission. His little sister and pack Gamma coolly regarded him for a second. She didn’t sass back, but let him had his fill. Among them, she’d always been the most patient.

“Those hunters sauntered into our territory slinging heavy ammunition and open-fired on the humans we swore to protect. Not to mention they targeted one of my own wolves. Someone has to pay,” Sergio said, tone laced with heat he didn’t bother hiding from his siblings.

Sergio didn’t miss the concerned glance she directed to Alessio, their brother and Beta. Tension brewed between them, but Michella and Alessio understood where his rage stemmed from.

They’d been with him right from the start, when the little town of Darkfall had been a warring ground for various animal groups vying for dominance. Sergio, Alessio and Michella set the rules back when they were pups themselves, learning the ropes. Made hard choices and sacrifices to ensure their land became safe haven for the humans and paranormals living in it.

Darkfall had a black reputation, and they made sure it stayed that way so larger and badder monsters wouldn’t target their little slice of heaven…until yesterday. Sergio couldn’t put all the blame on Harley.

His pack member found his vampire mate, saved him from a dangerous organization of hunters, but the killers wanted retribution for their dead comrades and something else. A mystical relic Sergio’s old friend once entrusted to him. The relic was back in its vault, thank God. Sergio would shudder to think what would happen if the Order of the Knife, an overzealous anti-supernatural organization, do once they had their hands on that kind of power.

Harley and his mate were alive, the other wolves involved would recover, but the rest of the town wouldn’t.

Sergio only needed to take one look. See the bullet-ridden buildings, the corpses, and signs of violence the hunters left behind to understand he’d failed. For ten fucking years, Darkfall was his. They worked in tandem with the local human authorities, knew every one by name, hell, and even hosted holiday events together. Sergio didn’t realize along the way, he’d grown cocky, complacent, and soft.

Closing his eyes briefly, Sergio calmed his surging beast. As the anchor grounding the rest of his wolves, Sergio knew those nearby would sense his lost control. The last thing he needed was more anxiety and panic.

“We couldn’t have predicted this would happen. No one could,” Alessio said, clasping his sh
oulder.

Sergio pushed his hand away in annoyance. Alessio might be blood, his right-hand man, but he wasn’t the Alpha. He didn’t comprehend the weight of the lives they’d lost during the chaos. Ignoring his brother, he turned to Michella. She looked at him warily now, as if she knew what the glint in his eyes meant.

“Michella, is the Silverback Pack open to negotiations?”

She grew still at those words. “Brother, you can’t seriously be considering that option. There must be another way,” Michella whispered.

“What option?” Alessio demanded, narrowing his eyes.

Sergio looked again with different eyes, past his siblings and shielded his eyes from the sun. At twelve-thirty in the afternoon, the two-story establishments lining Darkfall’s main street looked lazy, charming almost—if Sergio ignored the evidence left behind by the hunters. Some sold antiques. There was a dance studio that catered exclusively to kids to his right. A grocery to his left and beside that, a diner and old-fashioned soda shop. On the surface, Darkfall looked like the sort of place city slickers wanted to spend the weekend in.

To preserve all this, Sergio decided he could make another sacrifice.

“Sergio wants to make the deal with the Silverback clan,” Michella said.

Alessio growled. “Those assholes had been pain our asses for years. The territorial war with them cost us our brothers and sisters, or did you forget that?”

  “I never forget,” Sergio spat.

“Sure doesn’t seem like it, brother,” Alessio pointed out. He let out a huff. “So that’s your half-assed solution? Present our bellies like submissive dogs to our former enemies?”

Sergio’s patience snapped. Maybe he’d had enough of his blood questioning his decisions. Perhaps he needed to let out his rage. Whatever the reason, Sergio slammed Alessio against the window of the shop behind them, lunging for his throat. Glass cracked. Both of them tumbled over the display of books.

Sergio snarled, applying more pressure on his fingers. Alessio wouldn’t die or fracture easy. They’d tangled hundreds of times before. Clawed and bit at each other in wolf form whenever they needed to let out a little steam. Better hit each other than do something he’d regret later on. Alessio understood Sergio needed this, so he took some hits. Sergio did the same. Pain helped him think.

“Christ,” he heard Michella mutter behind him.

She didn’t sound surprise, only tired. Sometimes, Sergio felt a little sorry their baby sister had to clean their messes. Michella must have stepped into the shop, because she grabbed the scruff of Sergio’s shirt.

“Enough,” she hissed. “There are kids watching.”

At that, Sergio returned to reason. Alessio parted from him, panting. Both of them were covered in cuts and bruises. Sergio lifted his head from the ground to see they’d interrupted a book reading. Parents clutched their kids protectively, wide-eyed and frightened.

Sergio cleared his throat. Dusted his shirt and rose to his feet, feeling embarrassed. The onlookers were never really in any danger, but at least punching someone cleared his head.

“We apologize for the mess. I’ll send you a check, Sarah-Jane,” Sergio said to the young woman standing by the side.

She was one of the few there who didn’t show fear. The blonde had been the owner of Books with Bite for as long as Sergio remembered. Rumors said Sarah-Jane and her twin Sirius had been the owners for over a century. He didn’t know exactly what Sarah-Jane and Sirus were, only that she’d been one of Darkfall’s oldest residents. Sergio never quite forgot the twins were one of the few who supported Sergio’s claim on the town years ago, when few trusted him taking the reins.

Sarah-Jane fixed him a look that could melt icicles. “We all understand this is a tough time, Alpha. Do what you can to get your house in order.”

  “Come on guys,” Michella said.

They headed out. Alessio delivered a nasty upper cut that landed right on the side of Sergio’s jaw. Sergio let him so they were even.

“Had your fun?” Michella said dryly.

“Yeah.” Sergio took a deep breath. Knew his wolf was sated, for now. “I’m not kidding around and I’ve thought about this in depth.”

“Over a day?” Alessio asked, skeptical.

“Sooner or later, it had to happen. We need allies. I don’t trust anyone from Silverback, but when push comes to shove, they won’t break their word. Besides, keep your friends close and your enemies even closer, right?” Sergio asked, his tone light. He should’ve figured his siblings saw past his jokes.

“Brother, once you set yourself on this path, you can never go back,” Michella gently reminded him.

Alessio frowned, not understanding, but Sergio didn’t blame him. When the Silverback wolves made their offer months ago, Sergio took Michella and two enforcers to watch his back. He didn’t want to bother Alessio, especially when Alessio spent time with his estranged pup.

“What exactly are you agreeing to?” Alessio asked.

“They’ll be our allies if I agree to pick a she-wolf, one of their Alpha’s daughters to breed with.”

Alessio expelled a sharp breath. Shifters mated for life. Whoever Brendan, the Silverpack Alpha picked, Sergio was bound to her for life. Sergio hadn’t been the kind of man who believed in long-time commitments. As Alpha, he had his pick of wolves. A marriage of convenience would test him in ways he didn’t know, but it had to be done.

“But—” Michella began, but Sergio knew what she would say next.

“My preferences don’t matter,” Sergio cut her off.

“Like hell it doesn’t.” Sergio seldom saw Michella angry, but she faced him. She was shorter than him and a lot smaller, but determination flashed in her eyes.

Because both Sergio and Alessio never bothered hiding the fact they played on the all-male team. Most shifters were used to straight leaders, and the three of them had trouble at the start convincing other wolves they were a capable and dependable unit.

“I don’t like Brendan. The asshole keeps sprouting bullshit about his family being pureblood shifters, but his terms are explicitly clear. He wants to continue his bloodline, and he has no male Omega sons capable of carrying pups, only daughters.” Sergio felt a lot calmer now, certain of his decision.

Michella blinked when Sergio leaned over and kissed her forehead. It was something Sergio did when they were kids. Back when he used to tuck her in bed, because their parents were always not home.

“I’ll be fine. I’ve made my choice. Will you make arrangements?”

She studied Sergio for a couple of seconds, and then nodded. “I’ll contact them.”

“You’re letting him do this?” Alessio asked, outraged.

“It’s Sergio’s choice. He’s our brother, but he’s also our Alpha,” Michella reminded Alessio. “Will you watch his back?”

  Alessio grunted. “Always.”

Sergio clapped Alessio’s shoulder. “We’ll take four wolves with us. Pick those who won’t flinch when something goes wrong. Michella, I need you here to act in my stead.”

They parted to do their respective jobs. Once in the privacy of his own apartment, Sergio sunk into his easy chair, beer in hand. He flickered a glance to the mismatched pieces of furniture. Back when he first moved in, Michella kept pestering him to clean up, buy nicer things, but Sergio never saw the need. He’d always been practical and minimalist, but would a mate change that?

Only time would find out. Besides, each random hook-up and quick and dirty sessions Sergio had always left him more hollow and empty. Nearing thirties, Sergio ceased believing he’d ever find his fated mate. His freedom in exchange for a marriage of convenience was a small thing if it meant securing more power for his pack.

He’d tell the female his terms from the start. It was strictly business between them. Once he’d gotten her pregnant, they were free to choose whomever they wanted, but Sergio would never neglect their pup. The thought of having an offspring to care for and raise didn’t sound
so bad either. He’d never imagined himself a father, but the prospect strangely warmed his insides.

It would be better to share that future with someone I cared about. Owned and possessed, loved and cherished.

The thought came unbidden and unwanted. What if the woman Brendan picked was spiteful? A bitch that was hard to live with? Would she want a house, a dog, a white picket fence—the works, even if their mating were a charade?

Nothing was ever simple with shifters. They were hot-blooded, emotional, and liked indulging in politics. What were the chances Sergio would get a reasonable female? Judging from his own pack, she-wolves were deadly than males when it came to mates.

“Fuck. Over thinking this won’t get me anywhere,” Sergio muttered to himself.

He took a long pull of his beer, and leaned his head back. The next time he came back to Darkfall, he would be bringing back his new bride home.

  Chapter Two

“Did you see his picture? He’s sexy as hell,” Dee Dee gushed as she fixed Diana’s blonde hair.

From his corner of the room, Ron Silverback eyed his younger sister Diana. She sat stiffly in front of her vanity table, hands clenched into fists. Noting her knuckles were white, Ron decided to speak up.

“That Alpha ripped out the throats of our brothers,” Ron reminded. What was Dee Dee thinking? The older she-wolf meant well, he knew, but what use was feeding Diana lies about her new groom-to-be?

Dee Dee flashed him a venomous look. “No one asked your opinion, half-breed. Diana, why is he here?”
